Trailer Safety Chain

Trailer safety chains are legally required (per FMVSS 571.57 / SAE J684) to prevent trailer separation in hitch failure—crossed under the coupler and rated to exceed trailer GVWR. Typically Grade 30, 43, or 70 welded chain (5/16″–3/8″), with forged S-hooks or clevis ends for rapid attachment. Must be long enough to allow turning, short enough to prevent dragging, and clearly marked with grade/size. Galvanized for corrosion resistance; many states mandate two independent chains.
